Peter Comerford was born and educated in Sydney, Australia. He completed his teaching training at the Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA) in 1970, specifically to teach in Papua New Guinea. He taught at Madina and Utu High Schools in New Ireland and then taught and became Headmaster at Popondetta High School in Oro Province. He then accepted the position of Principal of Panguna International Primary School in Bougainville. Due to civil unrest and the closure of the giant copper mine, Peter returned to Australia with his family in 1990. He was then Head of Primary at Redfield College, Sydney until his retirement. Peter continues his close association with Papua New Guinea and has made several trips back with family members. This is his second adventure book for young adults set in Papua New Guinea.
Michael’s holiday on a tiny offshore island in Papua New Guinea, where his uncle owned a copra and cocoa plantation, was like an exciting dream. It was there that he became friends with Natlik, his uncle’s house servant who taught him to spear fish, recognise poisonous plants and corals and to light a fire without matches. However, an incredible boating and fishing trip with his uncle suddenly turned into a nightmare when disaster struck. Michael was left floundering in shark-infested waters off the coast of Southern New Ireland. When Michael failed to return home from the fishing trip, Natlik, using his sharp powers of observation and tracking skills is faced with a risky and dangerous trip across sea and through jungle to try and find his young friend.
Sebastian and his family live in Central New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. Not far from Sebastian’s home are huge mysterious caves, the Maliau Caves; an underground land, lost in time, known only by clan elders and through the retelling of stories and legends from local villagers. Maliau is a Pidgin word for eel. The caves were also known by the villagers as ‘The Bat Caves’. One day while exploring in the jungle Sebastian discovers a sinkhole which leads to the entrance of a cave. It contains incredible formations and ancient engravings. While standing near the stream that runs through the cave, a gigantic shadow slowly swims towards him... a spirit eel... a Maliau!
Sebastian excitedly runs home and then returns to the cave’s entrance with his brother Ashton. Their young sister Khloe sees them going but is unable to follow. The boys enter the cave together and make some exciting as well as frightening discoveries only to become trapped and lost in the cave system. Their brave young sister Khloe, accompanied by her friends Silitia and Sipondia and villagers Matagol and Benson play their own part in finding and rescuing the boys. The Maliau Caves Adventure is an exciting story of mystery, courage, survival, friendship and rescue.
